Surfing is dream of many but due to our busy schedule, one may not get time to enjoy or fulfill their dreams. But, when you get a chance to follow your dreams, don’t ever let that chance pass you by. I got a chance to go to a surf camp in Sumatra. After completing our graduation, my friend and I decided to go to Sumatra.

We applied for the visa and start planning to go there. We had get money exchanged, as we knew that there were no money changing facilities out there in Lampung, Sumatra. We planned to go there for about 1 week. The only thing I was worried about was surfing reefs, as I have only ever surfed beach breaks in my life. But, at the same time I was excited to do it, as the length & power of waves breaking over reefs is a whole new realm for me. Was my dream to surf reefs going to actually happen?

Surfing is a an adventurous sport, as one can ride different ocean waves of varying degrees of size & difficulty. We went there in the first week of August. We chose to stay at the very beautiful and exotic Damai bungalows. We went surfing the next day & every day after that.

Oh! It was so beautiful and pleasant to be in front of the ocean, when the sun was rising. The cool offshore breezes and tropical sun on us made us forget the whole world for a minute. We looked for somebody that would show us waves that would suit our abilities. It was not very tough to find somebody in this location, as there were many proficient and knowledgeable surfers available. They guided and taught us the right way to surf the surrounding reef breaks. He took good care of us and protected us from getting into danger. It was a little hard to surf for first three days, but later, I was able to surf on my own.

It was a great experience to ride a wave that went for 100 meters plus. Though, we did not want to go back this early, we had to and so, we left from there on sixth day. But, I’ve now achieved my dream of surfing reef breaks, with a lot more practice I’m sure I can get to the stage where I would feel more exhilaration than fear surfing over reefs. For our first time venturing off the tourist trail to find beautiful waves, people & locations, we would never forget this amazing experience of our week spent at Damai Bungalows, in our opinion the friendliest surf camp in South Sumatra.

Well, surfing is something that relaxes me and adds on to my confidence every time I surf. Hence, I started practicing it every day, so as to gain experience and increase my confidence level. Besides surfing, I also got to stay in some of the best Damai bungalow. And, staying there made my trip worthy. These bungalows were just a few kilometers away from Krui.
